Man, oh man, people just can’t stop talking about videoconferencing this year — and its potential to explode in adoption over the next 18 months to two years.

The latest yay-sayer numbers come from technology solution provider CDW, courtesy of its two new surveys of about 630 IT and telecommunications managers at U.S. companies (“Video Conferencing Straw Poll Report). That research figures that approximately one-half of businesses are using videoconferencing, while another 25 percent plan to use the technology within the next two years. The main focus is on desktop and room-based solutions, although there is a growing interest in “immersive telepresence,” according to CDW.

In a press release with the data, CDW’s vice president of converged infrastructure solutions said:

“Companies see videoconferencing as a great tool to collaborate remotely while cutting travel costs. Without videoconferencing, you had to plan travel and play all of the associated costs to get quality face-to-face time with a client. …. However, IT managers must still take a few steps to prepare for a successful implementation.”

Those steps often include:

  • Network assessment
  • IT network upgrades
  • An investment in managed conferencing services
